Join Habitat, Lowe’s for National Women Build Week – May 5-13

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Local volunteers join women across the United States to create affordable housing.

Women volunteers representing “The Build Generation” will raise their hammers at Habitat for Humanity construction sites across the country in recognition of National Women Build Week, May 5- 13. National Women Build Week is an initiative of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program developed in partnership with Lowe’s.

This year’s theme, “The Build Generation,” reflects the event’s goal to recruit and train women volunteers, as well as welcome the next generation of Habitat Women Builders – young women, ages 18 to 24 – to support Habitat’s mission to create affordable housing.

In honor of Mother’s Day, Lowe’s Heroes and women volunteers will raise the first walls on the Mung/Niang family’s new home at Southeast 171st and Division Street on Saturday, May 12.

“I can’t think of a better way to spend Mother’s Day weekend than working side-by-side with my mom and Habitat’s Women Build, giving back to the community just like she taught me to do,” said Katie Hughes, a long-time volunteer and member of Habitat’s Women Build Committee.

Lowe’s is providing Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East a $5,000 Lowe’s store gift card, as well as in-store volunteer training, in support of National Women Build Week.

“We are so grateful to Lowe’s, not only for their financial support, but also for the enthusiastic volunteers that give their time to Women Build,” said Katie “That’s a true sign of their dedication to Habitat’s mission.”

The Multnomah Food Initiative (MFI) is a partnership between community organizations, businesses and local governments, including Multnomah County, to promote a more sustainable, equitable and healthy local food System.  The goals of the MFI are to:

Annually, the MFI hosts a Food Summit.  (this year on June 15).

In anticipation of the 2012 summit, Multnomah County is requesting community proposals for 80-minute Worksessions.

Proposals should focus on supporting this year’s Food Summit theme of broadening our understanding of food justice within the goals of the Multnomah Food Action Plan.

Are YOU Up for It? Habitat Build-a-Thon – Sept 19–22

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Habitat For Humanity Portland/Metro East’s Build-a-Thon is an exciting community event that brings together volunteers, donors and community supporters to raise money and awareness for Habitat for Humanity. Over four days in September, four homes will take shape thanks to the helping hands of over 400 volunteers. Much like the concept of a walk-a-thon, Habitat Build-a-Thon volunteers will engage family, friends and colleagues to sponsor their volunteer efforts with Habitat.

We encourage all Build-a-Thon volunteers to fundraise a donation of $250 or more to support their participation and provide hope for a local family in need. Think about it this way, if 25 of your friends or colleagues gave just $10 each, you would reach your Build-a-Thon goal!

How to Participate:

Register

  • Build-a-Thon Team registration is now open!  Teams of eight or more volunteers should have a team leader fill out the Team Registration Form with their contact information. A Build-a-Thon coordinator will contact you to help you through the next steps.
  • Individual volunteers can sign up below!

Begin Fundraising

  • Start a Personal Fundraising Page and personalize it with pictures and stories to share with your supporters.
  • Share your goal with others via Facebook, Twitter, email, text or old fashioned soup cans on a string!
  • Reach for the roof! You may surprise yourself with just how easy fundraising can be. We suggest a minimum goal of $250 per volunteer  and shift.
  • If you’d like a paper pledge form please download one here.

Volunteer

  • Teams with five participants or more can register now by clicking here! Individuals will select a volunteer shift during their registration process starting May 1. You can contact the office to schedule more than one shift by calling 503.287.9529.
  • We’ll send you a reminder email in September before your scheduled shift.
  • Have fun!
