Description
Large-scale affordable housing redevelopments typically are the result of careful planning. They also can be hastened by natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina.  Whatever the impetus, residents of the original development must move their households. But how far must they move, and must they sever all their long-term ties to friends, family and community?

In San Francisco’s HOPE SF redevelopment, stakeholders are working hard to provide residents the opportunity to relocate on-site and maintain their social connections. In New Orleans’ Lafitte redevelopment, the redevelopment team and their social service partners have been staying in touch with former residents from shortly after Katrina  in 2006 through the opening of the first reopened apartments at the site during the past two years. Both strategies require a high degree of planning, research and coordination, and the payoffs could be great.

Join us to learn more about what is being learned in these two large-scale redevelopments about retaining current residents, and attracting former ones back.
